JVC's 42-inch LCD TV Achieves 100,000:1 Contrast with LED Backlight
JVC presented at CEATEC a 42-inch LCD TV, which has boosted a contrast ratio when rendering video to 100,000:1 through the adoption of LED backlight
JVC employed its proprietary "area control LCD driver" technology to raise the contrast ratio. Locating LEDs right under the LCD panel, the driver controls the luminance of the panel surface in 128 areas. Specifically, the driver controls the luminance of the backlight system for each of the 128 areas in the LCD panel after analyzing the luminance distribution of the video input signal.
Regarding the control areas, JVC said that the area control effects lower if the number of compartment areas is under 128 and the technology costs too much to incorporate if the number rises above 128. The backlight system uses 1,151 RGB LEDs in total, the company said.
