South Korea's display panel makers led the world in terms of the number of patents obtained last year for next-generation OLEDs, a report showed Monday.
OLEDs, or organic light-emitting diodes, are electricity-saving display panels with no need for back lighting. They are used mostly in personal devices such as mobile phones and MP3 music players.
According to the report by market researcher OLEDnet, Samsung SDI Co., LG Electronics Inc. and other local companies gained a combined 1,364 OLED-related patents last year, which accounted for 52 percent of the total approved in South Korea, Japan and the United States.
