Laser-TV from Mitsubishi at CES-2008?
Mitsubishi says it will exhibit the new 'Laser HDTV' at this January's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
That's according to an article in today's New York Times. We reported.
The Laser TV has been long anticipated because of its capacity to offer brighter, crisper images because the laser enables a more precise blend of colors.
In addition, the use of the laser -- instead of a bulb or tube -- improves energy efficiency.
"If you look at any screen today, the color content is roughly about 30-35 per cent of what the eye can see," says Jean-Michel Pelaprat, CEO of Novalux, a U.S. firm involved in the development of Laser TV. "But for the very first time with a laser TV we'll be able to see 90 per cent of what the eye can see. All of a sudden what you see is a lifelike image on display."
One of the lasers widely demonstrated at trade shows is made by Novalux, based in Sunnyvale, Calif. “The lasers will be able to give more than 90 percent of the color range that our eyes can see,” said Jean-Michel Pelaprat, chief executive of Novalux. “That’s not available from plasma displays and L.C.D.’s, whose color gamut reaches only 40 percent and 35 percent, respectively.”
L.C.D. televisions, too, may soon be affected by the new light sources, Mr. Chinnock of Insight Media said. The next step may be to eliminate the cold cathode fluorescent lamps that illuminate the sets from the back.
