AUO's 3 New LCD Panel Technologies

AU Optronics Corp (AUO) of Taiwan developed three new panel technologies for LCD TVs.

The technologies will be demonstrated at FPD International from October 24, 2007 in Yokohama Japan. These technologies feature a high contrast ratio of 5,000:1, they are only 2cm thick and their power consumption has been reduced by half.

First, AUO developed a panel equipped with the third-generation AMVA technology that allows a native contrast ratio of 5,000:1. The development was achieved with the adoption of the new pixel design, optimized color filter pigments and a technique to integrate the backlight and optical film.

Because the panel uses the existing CCFL backlight, it can be commercialized sooner than the products whose contrast ratio is enhanced by the local dimming technology for LED backlight, the company said.

Then, AUO developed an LCD module whose thickness is reduced from 32.5 to 20mm. To develop the module, the company solved the problem of non-uniformity in luminance resulting form the reduction of thickness by the improvement of optical system.
