Rolith starts nano structured coatings application development.
Rolith, Inc. is developing advanced nanostructured products for solar energy, green building, solid state lighting and efficient display products using a proprietary nanolithography technology. Its “Rolling Mask” lithography system (RML) has the potential to surpass current competitors in throughput, cost and quality. The technology is based on a novel concept of continuous (conveyor or Roll-to-Roll) nano patterning using cylindrical photomasks. A prototype was designed and built in 2011 in partnership with SUSS Microtec AG. It allows patterning a 300 mm x 300 mm plates or 12” wafers (glass, Si, etc.). Rolith has filed 11 patent applications (pending) and successfully demonstrated printing dense nanostructures with less than 300 nm features; the team is working on further resolution enhancement development. Technology roadmap promises scaling up this method to 1m substrates later this year and up to 3 m plates in conveyor mode the next 2 years. In addition, the system will be adapted to handle flexible substrate materials in Roll-to-Roll mode.
Rolith, Inc. is looking for Joint Development Projects with solar companies (light trapping layers for solar cells), energy storage companies (nano structured electrodes), display manufacturers (nano structured TCOs), solid state lighting manufacturers (light extraction layers for LEDs and OLEDs), and other projects requiring low cost/high
throughput/ large area nanopatterning technology

Nokias ClearBlack AMOLED Display technology
Nokia introduced a lot of smartphones, with their ClearBlack AMOLED Display (Lumia 900, Lumia 800, X7 and E7).
We have learned already that Nokia use a polarizing filter that block the incoming light and so Nokia can reach the goal for a better outdoor quality.
At the Nokia Blog the company explain how it work in detail:
- It hits the linear polariser, this vertically polarises the light. (Polarising means – roughly – aligning the wave vibration in a particular direction).
- Then it hits the circular polariser retardation layer. This converts the light again, making it right-circularly polarised.
- Then it hits the screen and bounces off it, switching the rotation of the light to leftist.
- It goes back through the retardation layer. When this happens, the light becomes horizontally polarised.
- Finally, it hits the linear polariser, since the light is horizontally polarised at this point it can be blocked entirely by this optical solution.
Samsung use nearly the same technology with Super-Amoled. Here are some pictures about a comparison:

Why Apple can not use large OLED-Tv panels before Q4 2013
There are new reports that Apple want to use large OLED panels for the iTV device. But its not possible because LG plans to ramp up a new 8.5G production line or want to upgrade a LCD production line to OLED.
Hee Yeon Kim from LG Display says that the korean company need 18 months to convert from LCD production to OLED. LG Display has not make a decision to convert a line or ramp up a new line.
LG Display is production ready for their pilot line, we can produce 48.000 devices per month. Our conclusion is that we did not see cheap LG OLED-Television device before end 2013.
The second company which introduced a 55 inch SUPER-OLED-Tv is Samsung. Samsung is production ready and want to introduce the device before LG-Display whole over the world. We spoke with Samsung Austria and they told us that the price will be much cheaper than 8.000.- Euros. The production capacity is more than 48.000 devices per month. But to less for Apple. Samsung want to push OLED-Tv over their own brand. The goal is to mass produce large OLED Tv panels in the first quarter 2013 with the new 8G line.
The conclusion is there is no way that APPLE can purchase so much large OLED panels before Q4 2013.

Dark Google Apps now available to save power for smartphones with AMOLED
Do you remember our article last year AMOLED NEED MORE POWER AT WHITE BACKGROUND THAN LCD.
It always depend on the content, as example if the application has a white background like excel or word a AMOLED need 20 – 30 percent more power than an LCD. But if you run a video or you show some pictures OLEDs would use less power than an LCD. It always depend on the content. If you show a video AMOLED uses 15% of the power that an LCD would use.
Google loves Amoled Displays all smartphones from Google and Samsungs Galaxy S devices are with AMOLED, Super-AMOLED etc. Now the guys from xda-developers.com has made OLED friendly apps with dark or black background.
